Welcome to the Your Hair Story Series presented by Mixed Chicks. This dynamic, new innovative series allows Mixed Chicks users to share their personal stories behind their hair. Hair that kinks, coils, curls, waves, and tells a story reflecting their culture, race, ethnicity, and upbringing. Like our customers, hair comes in all shades, textures and shapes unique to each individual and here at Mixed Chicks we want to celebrate that to the utmost extent. Meet our exquisite Mixed Chicks women, men, and children who exhibit beauty from the root and give us honest, bold stories that we are honored to share with you.
What has your experience been with the Mixed Chicks products?
I started using “mixed chicks” in 2009. I’d been natural all my life but never knew what products to use for my curly hair, and most of the time I thought my hair was “difficult” so I would normally keep it straight. In 2009 I was going curly again and I remember seeing the products in a beauty supply store and the name “mixed chicks” just drew me in, I felt like I HAD to try it for the name alone. Almost 10 years later and it’s still my go-to hair product and gives me some of my best results for a wash-n-go. I also truly believe that if you have damaged hair and use ‘Mixed Chicks” products for a year and along with no heat, it will bring your hair back to life by the end of that year!
What makes them different than other hair/beauty products you tried in the past?
What I’ve learned with Mixed Chicks is “a little goes a long way” you don’t need to put a lot of the leave-in in your hair to see results and it’s a great product for hold with shine while still allowing movement in your hair.
Do you have a go-to or token Mixed Chick Product you cannot go without?
I can’t go without the deep conditioner. I use it to treat my hair and I even use it as a styling product from time to time and works great
How has having a product specifically for your biracial/ethnic/multiracial background impacted your beauty regime?
Mixed Chicks made my life easier, I know that it works on my hair and I know how to use it.
How do your curls/hair texture represent your cultural/ethnic background?
Like I said before, the first thing that made me try “Mixed Chicks” was the name, I consider myself a black multiracial person, My parents are both from the West Indies and they are both mixed. My Mom is black, Portuguese and Indian and my Dad is black and Portuguese, so growing up I rarely met people that had hair like mine, unless they were my cousins who have similar mixes to me. I have a lot of fine, soft curls, and for a good part of my life I didn’t understand my curls. Even though I’ve always loved my hair and appreciated it, I didn’t necessarily know what worked for it, and Mixed Chicks helped me to understand my hair a lot more.
If you could define Your Hair Story in one word what would it be?
Why is the hair revolution celebrating natural/healthy hair types vital for our generation?
I think it’s so important to celebrate our natural and healthy hair because there’s lot of girls like me who grew up with “unique”, blended hair types that didn’t look or feel like anything in a beauty store or magazine and it’s taken us a long time to see our own representation in mainstream media! It’s always important to have your own beauty celebrated and now we’re finally seeing that.
If your ‘Mixed Chick’ story were a song, what would it be?
“Formation” By Beyonce. When I started using Mixed Chicks in 2009, I was the only person I knew with it, and along my hair journey I have put all of my friends, family members and strangers on to using Mixed Chicks. I regularly have people say to me “that mixed chicks is the truth, my hair is popping.” LOL it makes me feel like an unofficial team member lol. So Formation is a perfect description of it because since 2009 I’ve said “ok ladies, now let’s get in formation.”
