Welcome to the Your Hair Story Series presented by Mixed Chicks. This dynamic, new innovative series allows Mixed Chicks users to share their personal stories behind their hair. Hair that kinks, coils, curls, waves, and tells a story reflecting their culture, race, ethnicity, and upbringing. Like our customers, hair comes in all shades, textures and shapes unique to each individual and here at Mixed Chicks we want to celebrate that to the utmost extent. Meet our exquisite Mixed Chicks women, men, and children who exhibit beauty from the root and give us honest, bold stories that we are honored to share with you.
▪ What has been your experience been with the Mixed Chicks products?
I’ve had a pleasant experience with Mixed Chicks products. I’ve been using Mixed Chicks products since I started my natural hair and it’s one of my favorite natural, curly hair brands.
▪ What makes them different than other hair/beauty products you tried in the past?
Mixed Chicks brand is unlike any other brand because of its diversity. It’s great to know that there is a curly hair line for every & any type of waves, curls, and coils. I also enjoyed Mixed Chicks brand that focuses on simplicity. I struggled with my hair for so long and also think “what should I put in my hair and how would this fit into my hair regimen”. Mixed Chicks line is simple and great for the lazy natural that doesn’t want the fuss with their hair.
▪ Do you have a Go-To or token Mixed Chick Product you cannot go without?
One of my fav products were the Mixed Chicks Gentle Clarifying Shampoo, that gets rid of the dirt and product buildup without stripping away your hair’s natural oils, and the Mixed Chicks Leave-In , a moisturizing, and lightweight leave in conditioner that’s a fav for my wash-n-go style.
▪ How has having a product specifically for your biracial/ethnic/multiracial background impacted your beauty regime?
I love that there is a product line out there for naturally curly, coily hair. When I was growing up, there were hardly any curly, natural hair products or brands targeted towards textured hair on the market. Now, we have brands like Mixed Chicks that are designed for us, so it’s great to see that texture hair is making its way in the hair and beauty industry.
▪ How do your curls/hair texture represent your cultural/ethnic background?
My curls represent the diversity in natural hair. My mother has fine, wavy hair, while I have fine, but fine, super tight curls. Natural hair can be a mixture of different hair types from wavy to curly, and coily. It’s versatile.
▪ What is one feature of the Mixed Chicks brand that empowers your hair/beauty care?
Before I started my natural hair journey, I felt the need to have my hair straight and continued to rely on relaxers, hot combs, and straighten irons to make my hair ‘pretty’. I love that Mixed Chicks empowers us to embrace our multicultural background and the multicultural movement. Mixed Chicks empowers us to break away from this standard and to celebrate our curls.
▪ If you could define Your Hair Story in one word what would it be?
I would say my hair story could be defined as a “learning” experience. After my transition to natural hair, I felt that I had to relearn everything about healthy hair care.
▪ Why is the hair revolution celebrating natural/healthy hair types vital for our generation?
The natural hair revolution is vital for our generation to learn how to not only embrace your curly hair but to learn how to take care of it and keep it healthy. For me, I didn’t always love my curls. Trying to maintain my super curly natural hair was a struggle and I remember as a child getting a relaxer put in my hair to make it “manageable”. The relaxers and hot tools was an easy way to style my hair. When I transitioned into my naturally curly hair, it was the first time where I learned how to care and style my hair.
▪ If your ‘Mixed Chick’ story were a song, what would it be?
This is a difficult question, but I must say it will be “Love is a Battlefield”. Learning about healthy hair care, knowing how to style it and trying to figure out what works is far from easy. It was a struggle. LOL
▪ Do you have any go-to beauty/hair bloggers or vloggers who inspire or help your hairstyles? (If you are a blogger/vlogger please feel free to share information on your page/brand)
Monica Stevens (MoKnowsHair) is one of my fav natural hair vloggers to watch when I started my natural hair journey. I love her styles and always look forward to her YouTube videos.
