Mixed Chicks: Your Hair Story Series – Deneen

By Desiree Johnson

Welcome to the Your Hair Story Series presented by Mixed Chicks. This dynamic, new innovative series allows Mixed Chicks users to share their personal stories behind their hair. Hair that kinks, coils, curls, waves, and tells a story reflecting their culture, race, ethnicity, and upbringing. Like our customers, hair comes in all shades, textures and shapes unique to each individual and here at Mixed Chicks we want to celebrate that to the utmost extent. Meet our exquisite Mixed Chicks women, men, and children who exhibit beauty from the root and give us honest, bold stories that we are honored to share with you.

What has your experience been with the Mixed Chicks products? I’ve been using Mixed Chicks for about 4 years now.  I wear a weave, and my hair is super versatile. I love that the shampoo is sulfate-free!  As for conditioners…  I love to use the leave-in conditioner when I let it air dry and stay curly.  Then I used the deep conditioner whenever I blow-dry and straighten it.

What makes them different than other hair/beauty products you tried in the past? Other products have left my hair SUPER dry, which is never okay when you have hair that craves moisture.  Dry hair leads to damaged hair which is not good.

Do you have a go-to or token Mixed Chick Product you cannot go without? My go-to product is the Mixed Chick deep conditioner!  I hate dry looking hair and it’s even worse when you try to style it. The deep conditioner is a staple when I wash my hair to make sure it stays healthy.

How has having a product specifically for your biracial/ethnic/multiracial background impacted your beauty regime? I actually spend less time on my hair now that it is more manageable and healthy.  Having more time on my hands is priceless!

How do your curls/hair texture represent your cultural/ethnic background? I wear a weave BUT… I always get the most compliments when my hair looks the curliest.  Or to some, ethnic.  I think curls and natural looks are absolutely gorgeous especially when the hair looks healthy.

What is one feature of the Mixed Chicks brand that empowers your hair/beauty care? I’m a health and fitness coach so whenever I find products that are sulfate-free, I buy them.  Sulfates have been known to create all sorts of health problems, and while I’m no stranger to beauty products that have chemicals in them, I’m starting to eliminate them from my regimen slowly, but surely.  Using these products is just another way that I honor my body and keep it healthy.

If you could define Your Hair Story in one word what would it be? Liberating

Why is the hair revolution celebrating natural/healthy hair types vital for our generation? I had SOME role models who celebrated their natural healthy hair types when I was growing up, but not enough.  And while cultures continue to come together and manifest themselves in the form our children, we need WAY more celebrating going on to keep positive standards of beauty in public.  While I do wear a weave, there may have been a point where I wouldn’t rock the natural look EVEN WITH MY WEAVE.  Which is insane, but maybe 15 years ago, I might have questioned my look.  There were all sorts of negative stereotypes affiliated with natural looks, and I’m happy to see those barriers getting broken down.  I certainly have a positive image of my appearance and LOVE that I can treat my hair as an accessory and extension of my personality.

If your ‘Mixed Chick’ story were a song, what would it be? Glamorous – Fergie
