Mixed Chicks: Your Hair Story Series – Nia Dupree

By Desiree Johnson

Welcome to the Your Hair Story Series presented by Mixed Chicks. This dynamic, new innovative series allows Mixed Chicks users to share their personal stories behind their hair. Hair that kinks, coils, curls, waves, and tells a story reflecting their culture, race, ethnicity, and upbringing. Like our customers, hair comes in all shades, textures and shapes unique to each individual and here at Mixed Chicks we want to celebrate that to the utmost extent. Meet our exquisite Mixed Chicks women, men, and children who exhibit beauty from the root and give us honest, bold stories that we are honored to share with you.

What has your experience been with the Mixed Chicks products? I found the Mixed Chicks products on-line in, I believe 2011. (Mixedchick.net) I was trying to find products for multi-ethic/mixed hair. I came across the Mixed Chicks leave-in conditioner, shampoo and deep conditioner and decided to order. The Mixed Chicks leave-in conditioner was the first product that I found that actually worked for my curls. I had some heat damage at the time and the leave-in held and conditioned my curls beautifully and I was hooked!

What makes it different than other hair/beauty products you tried in the past? Mixed Chicks always works! I mean always. It’s my holy grail curl product. I try tons of products for my social media, but I always come back to Mixed Chicks. Other products that I have tried work and then at some point will stop working. (depending on the length or color or season) Another reason to love the line is you can find it easily. Another lines can be difficult to find from time to time. I just have to drive over to Target to find my Mixed Chicks products. I love that its a product created by women of mixed heritage who get it. My hair is a combination of textures and getting it to do what it does best, can depend on the hair products I use.

Do you have a go-to or token Mixed Chicks Product you cannot go without? Yes! The Mixed Chicks leave-in conditioner. The leave-in is something I consistently have on hand and recommend to people who ask for product advice.

How has having a product specifically for your cultural/biracial/ethnic/multiracial background impacted your beauty regime? The line makes my routine so easy! I can have my wash and go finished in 10 minutes with confidence and either air dry or blow dry with a diffuser. I don’t need million products to get the job done.

How do your curls/hair texture represent your cultural/ethic background? My mom is Creole and my dad is Puerto Rican. I come from a long line of curly haired men and women. As an Afro-Latina I think my hair represent the powerful, strong cultures that makes up my DNA. My hair has many different textures I have 3a in the front 3b in the middle and 3c in the back and Mixed Chicks products brings all those curls together.

What is one feature of the Mixed Chicks brand that empowers your hair/beauty care? It makes me feel valued as a mixed woman. Often times people & brands want you to changes or conform and come under a specific label. (choose a side) This brand celebrates and encourages multiracial and biracial people to be themselves. I love that!

If you could define Your Hair Story in one word what would it be? Wild!

Why is the hair revolution celebrating natural/healthy hair types vital for our generation? It’s not conforming! It’s telling people to embrace their own hair. Letting it be free! Valuing what you have been given by God and sharing it with the World. (not hiding it) And encouraging others to do the same. This revolution is refining beauty and taking it out of the box. It’s like revealing an awesome secret that been hidden from the world. Mixed Chicks is helping more women share their hair with confidence!

If your Mixed Chick story were a song, what would it be? Superstition by Steve Wonder! My hair is superstitious about product, lol. Plus, my hair is a great accessory for dancing. I love to shake it!

Do you have any go-to beauty/ hair bloggers or bloggers who inspire or help your hairstyles? I have a beauty channel on YouTube that focuses on hair, makeup, fashion and life. I have several videos including tutorial, products reviews and girl talk chats that I think ladies would enjoy. I’m also active on Instagram and Facebook sharing helpful content for curlies . I personally follow Itsmyrayraye Raye Boyce & naptural85 Whitney White. They both have great personalities and tons of helpful tutorials and advice.
