Welcome to the Your Hair Story Series presented by Mixed Chicks. This dynamic, new innovative series allows Mixed Chicks users to share their personal stories behind their hair. Hair that kinks, coils, curls, waves, and tells a story reflecting their culture, race, ethnicity, and upbringing. Like our customers, hair comes in all shades, textures and shapes unique to each individual and here at Mixed Chicks we want to celebrate that to the utmost extent. Meet our exquisite Mixed Chicks women, men, and children who exhibit beauty from the root and give us honest, bold stories that we are honored to share with you.
What has your experience been with the Mixed Chicks products? My hair texture is tricky. I need products that are light enough to keep my volume, but heavy enough to keep my hair moisturized. Mixed Chicks is one of the only lines that has products that are exactly balanced between the two in a way that my hair loves!
What makes them different than other hair/beauty products you tried in the past? Mixed Chicks products allow me versatility that I didn’t have before. I had been searching for a leave in conditioner that was sulfate free, light, and moisturizing without heavy fragrances/dyes/chemicals for a long while before I came across the Mixed Chicks line.
Do you have a Go-To or token Mixed Chick Product you cannot go without? Yeeees! I LIVE off of Mixed Chicks Leave-In Conditioner. I swear this stuff came down from the Universe just for my hair. I have not been without it for about 3 years now!! I no longer have to struggle with my hair.
How has having a product specifically for your cultural/biracial/ethnic/multiracial background impacted your beauty regime? I used to struggle quite often with having hair too bogged down with product made for thicker hair, or too dry from using products with chemicals. I’d have frizz or really beautiful curls but absolutely no volume. It became my literal hair woe. Mixed Chicks allowed me to have both definition AND volume and that was massive for me. I quickly became a Mixed Chicks spokesperson and spread the word to every curly head I knew lol.
How do your curls/hair texture represent your cultural/ethnic background? I’m a Dominican woman, which means I’m fully Dominican, fully Caribbean and fully Black. My hair texture has been one that represented “good hair,” which I hated growing up. I struggled with frizz, struggled to detangle the beast, struggled to style my hair without using loads of product. I was miserable, my hair was not healthy, and it was always pulled up and breaking off due to tight ponytails and ECO gel from the discount store LOL! I kept it blown out and silently wished that one day I’d be able to wear my curls the way I wanted to and still be considered beautiful the way I was when my hair was flat and straight.
What is one feature of the Mixed Chicks brand that empowers your hair/beauty care? One major feature for me is longevity. Once I’ve used a product for a while, I usually have to switch after some months because my hair doesn’t respond to it as readily and I have to take a break. Mixed Chicks is the very first brand that I have never had to take a break from in the three years I’ve been using it. My hair ALWAYS responds and complies lol.
If you could define Your Hair Story in one word what would it be? Freedom
Why is the hair revolution celebrating natural/healthy hair types vital for our generation? It’s vital because my generation of little girls grew up thinking something was wrong with our hair unless we could achieve bone straight sleekness. There weren’t many women who embraced natural hair, and we just went with what we knew in a societal way. But what an important message to give to little girls today. Your hair is beautiful RIGHT out of your head! You can make pretty styles and be as beautiful as you want to be and you don’t have to dull your curls and fros for anybody!! Your hair is more than enough, more than amazing, more than incredible JUST SO!!!
If your ‘Mixed Chick’ story were a song, what would it be? I Will Survive – Gloria Gaynor LOL!!! I’d sing it to my dry frizz and bad hair habits!
Do you have any go-to beauty/hair bloggers or vloggers who inspire or help your hairstyles? My current go-to is MissCharmsie, her page has taught me sooo much on thinner curls that need all the volume help they can get! SunKissAlba (I love her page), she taught me about the process of moisturizing properly, and protective styling for my hair type. Jasmeannn is a great source of hairspiration!!
