Your hair Story series - Sinead

By Desiree Johnson

Welcome to the Your Hair Story Series presented by Mixed Chicks. This dynamic, new innovative series allows Mixed Chicks users to share their personal stories behind their hair. Hair that kinks, coils, curls, waves, and tells a story reflecting their culture, race, ethnicity, and upbringing. Like our customers, hair comes in all shades, textures and shapes unique to each individual and here at Mixed Chicks we want to celebrate that to the utmost extent. Meet our exquisite Mixed Chicks women, men, and children who exhibit beauty from the root and give us honest, bold stories that we are honored to share with you

▪ What has your experience been with the Mixed Chicks products?

My experience with Mixed Chicks has been nothing but amazing, they are the first products for me that felt like the right balance for multi textured hair not too heavy not too light. And the smell is amazing and what everyone knows me by!

▪ What makes them different than other hair/beauty products you tried in the past?

What makes the leave in conditioner different from other products is that it doesn’t leave your hair sticky when applying it. It dries in a way where it doesn’t look like you have products in your hair it makes your curl look super moisturized and not weighed down.

▪ Do you have a Go-To or token Mixed Chick Product you cannot go without?

My go-to Mixed Chick product is leave in! I have the extra-large 1 liter tubs that are probably for salon use, but they are stacked up in the attic so I’m never without 🙂

▪ How has having a product specifically for your biracial/ethnic/multiracial background impacted your beauty regime?

Having products specifically for my biracial background has made me feel like who I actually am which is mixed race. It hasn’t made me feel like “Oh because I’m mixed race I either have to use Afro-Caribbean heavy products or use European light products”. There are actually products out there now which recognize the mix of the 2 and you can get the most out of your hair type now.

▪ How do your curls/hair texture represent your cultural/ethnic background?

My curls represent my cultural background in the modeling world as it sets me apart from most models in my agency. When I used to relax my hair it was a lot harder to get noticed plus it wasn’t clear where I came from. My ethnicity is clear with curly hair and clients love that.

▪ What is one feature of the Mixed Chicks brand that empowers your hair/beauty care?

One feature about the Mixed Chicks brand that empowers my hair care is the fact that it is alcohol-free! As well as the fact it’s animal cruelty free. Alcohol in any beauty product whether its hair or make-up dries everything up. My hair is naturally on the dryer side so previous products I’ve tried with alcohol over time just damage my hair and cause me to get split ends a lot faster. To have a brand that is free of this and also cruelty free but can still leave your hair feeling amazing is a huge bonus.

▪ If you could define Your Hair Story in one word what would it be?

▪ Why is the hair revolution celebrating natural/healthy hair types vital for our generation?

Celebrating the hair revolution is vital for our generation because as social media has become so huge recently a lot more than when my generation was growing up! I think it’s great that there are now platforms our generation can share our transitional stories to let younger generations see the beauty of embracing the natural you. Hopefully, they never have to go through the transitional stage in the first place. Parents will now be more informed and clued up how to let their child’s hair naturally be and maintain it with good products instead of relax it for easiness. I’m seeing more mixed race children than ever keeping their natural hair and it’s a beautiful thing 🙂

▪ If your ‘Mixed Chick’ story were a song, what would it be?

Easy, If my Mixed Chick story was a song it would be India Arie ft Akon – “I am not my hair,” helping me discover me as a person and losing the expectations and stereotypes society has.

▪ Do you have any go-to beauty/hair bloggers or vloggers who inspire or help your hairstyles?

My YouTube channel is Sinead on Screen and my fellow curly girls I follow and admire is @hairissimba and @ownbyfemme
