J. Renee

What does being “Mixed, Multiracial or Bi-racial mean to you in 2017? I am both bi-racial and mixed and it’s important to know the difference between the two.  My father was white and half Irish and my mom is black, which makes me bi-racial.  I also come from a mixed culture, since my father was half Irish.  Growing up I never knew I was bi-racial/mixed until around the time I became a teenager and people use to ask me “What are you mixed with?”  Until then I thought I was like everyone else.  Today, I am so proud to say I’m bi-racial and mixed because I am the product of the best of both worlds!  I can relate to both sides, black and white and that gives me a connection to both races.

Do you have a Go-To or token Mixed Chick Product you cannot go without? Yes!! I love, love, love Mixed Chick’s Leave-In conditioner!  I not only use it in my hair but I also use it in my clip in extensions and when I wear a wig.  Weave hair needs love, too!

How has having a product specifically for your cultural/biracial/ethnic/multiracial background impacted your beauty regime? Having a product specifically designed for my bi-racial background has done wonders for me and my hair.  Before I discover Mixed Chicks products I had to use a ton of gel, moose and whatever else I could find to tame my mane and define my natural curls.  I would spend a lot of time and it would take a tremendous amount of effort to wear at my hair natural.  That all changed after using Mixed Chicks Leave-In conditioner.  This one product alone has cut down my styling time and has made my life (and hair) so much easier and better!

Do you use any other Mixed Chicks products as part of your beauty routine? (Paddle Brushes/Make-Up/ Soap/Spring Bands) I love wearing my hair straight but it’s so much work to achieve and very hard to maintain. (I have enough hair on my head for two people!)  However, I started using Mixed Chicks Straightening Serum and let me tell you how impressed I am with this product! Not only is it a thermal heat protectant, it cuts drying time down in half!  And to top it off its lightweight and doesn’t weight my hair down. Although I have a lot of hair, my hair is low to normal in porosity, more often on the low side.  Therefore, I can’t use heavy products. In addition to using the Leave-In and Straightening Serum, I use Hair Silk for shine, Sulfate Free shampoo and the Detangling Deep Conditioner

What new 2017 Mixed Chicks product are you interested in trying out? (New Products on MixedChicks.NetI can’t wait to try the Slick Styling Tamer. I wear my hair up a lot so this would be perfect for my edges.  I also want to try the Styling Gel and Conditioning Cleanse.

How do your curls/hair texture represent your cultural/ethnic background? Being Bi-racial gives me hair that represents the best of both worlds.  My dad’s hair was straight/wavy and my mom has thick course hair. In return I have a head full of wild hair!

What is one feature of the Mixed Chicks brand that empowers your hair/beauty care? The one thing that really stands out to me about the Mixed Chicks brand and empowers me is the versatility.  Although I am transitioning from using so much heat on my hair, when I want to wear my hair straight I can use the Straightening Serum and go from curly to straight without compromising the health of my hair.  The line isn’t just for curly girls only and that’s a very important feature to me.

Why is the hair revolution celebrating natural/healthy hair types vital for our generation?  I got my first relaxer at 13 and I didn’t stop until my early 30’s.  So more than half my life I never knew what my natural hair was like because I use to straighten it to death and I could care less about my curls. In fact, I don’t think I knew I had curls.  I just thought my only option was to relax it to make it manageable.  It wasn’t until 2012 that I actually started to embrace my natural hair and that’s when the struggle began.  I wanted to see if I could wear my hair curly but it was hard to find the right products. However, my sister introduced me to Mix Chicks and it completely changed my life! It’s so important for our generation to celebrate who we are and how we were created.  It took me almost my entire life accept the way God made me and my hair is a big part of me.  My hair wasn’t the problem, I was!  I had to change the way I saw myself and the way I thought about my hair.  Now I can say my hair is my crown!

Is there a (Mixed/Multiracial/Bi-racial) celebrity who empowers you? I love Tracee Ellis Ross.  Her hair is the bomb and she clearly owns who she is!
