Do you have a go-to or token Mixed Chick Product you cannot go without?
I absolutely love the Leave-In Conditioner. My curls crave moisture and the conditioner is just what my curls need.
How has having a product specifically for your cultural/biracial/ethnic/multiracial background impacted your beauty regime?
Growing up, there really weren’t products that could lift my curls and define them at the same time. Either a product wouldn’t control the frizz or it would weigh my hair down and look like a dumped a bottle of glue on my head. The Mixed Chicks products really allow my hair to be free, natural, and have an effortless look all at the same time.
Do you use any other Mixed Chicks products as part of your beauty routine?
I actually am a huge fan of the Spring Bands. I am a very athletic woman and need to tie my hair up so that I can focus on my fitness when working out. When using other hair ties, my hair would get pulled, tangled, and strained from the ties. I started using the Spring Bands and now I could workout and make sure by body and hair are healthy all at the same time.
What new 2017 Mixed Chicks product are you interested in trying out?
I started using the Morning After Redefining Foam and it’s a definite game changer. I hated how my curls looked limp like soggy French fries a few days after I washed it. I was even more so annoyed that I would have to re-wet my hair and start the whole process all over again. The foam allows me to bring the life back to my curls with minimal effort.
How do your curls/hair texture represent your cultural/ethnic background?
My curls are a pivotal part of who I am. I love to say that I am the only one that can define my curls and make them pop. Same goes for my identity. My intersecting identities are for me and me alone to define.
What is one feature of the Mixed Chicks brand that empowers your hair/beauty care?
The brand is another example of the power of embracing who you are and what makes you unique. I appreciate how the brand and products are used to accentuate our natural features and beauty, as opposed to trying to change them.
Why is the hair revolution celebrating natural/healthy hair types vital for our generation?
I am so proud of the fact that women and men feel confident and empowered to let their beauty shine. For far too long, I thought straight hair was the epitome of beautiful hair. I damaged my hair throughout high school because there was not enough representation of natural/healthy hair types in the media. I tried to change who I was to meet society’s expectations of beauty. Now, I no longer put heat on my hair at all. I try to even stay away from a diffuser if I can. I want my curls to be able to breathe and show up they way they seem fit day to day. I am excited to see people of all ages and shades flooding our streets and media in their natural and amazingly beautiful state.
Is there a (Mixed/Multiracial/Bi-racial) celebrity who empowers you?
Tracee Ellis Ross is one of the few celebrities that I saw whose hair and personality were bigger than life. She inspires me to be creative with my curls and experiment with different volumes and styles.
Do you have any go-to beauty/hair bloggers or vloggers who inspire or help your hairstyles?
No, my hair has a mind of its’ own. I pretty much just have to be ready for anything when trying new styles to see if my hair will actually respond. Therefore, I may get inspiration from a look, but I do not actively follow any bloggers/vloggers. Shout-out to the beauty and health entrepreneurs though!
