Mixed Chicks Presents: Your Hair Story Series- Melissa

By Desiree Johnson

Welcome to the Your Hair Story Series presented by Mixed Chicks. This dynamic, new innovative series allows Mixed Chicks users to share their personal stories behind their hair. Hair that kinks, coils, curls, waves, and tells a story reflecting their culture, race, ethnicity, and upbringing. Like our customers, hair comes in all shades, textures and shapes unique to each individual and here at Mixed Chicks we want to celebrate that to the utmost extent. Meet our exquisite Mixed Chicks women, men, and children who exhibit beauty from the root and give us honest, bold stories that we are honored to share with you.

What does “Mixed, Multiracial or Bi-racial) mean to you in 2017?

To be multiracial in 2017 means to encourage individuality in all people, mixed or not, just by being yourself.

Do you have a go-to or token Mixed Chick Product you cannot go without?

The Mixed Chicks Leave-in Conditioner is the best wash-n-go hair product I have ever used. I even have my boyfriend using it. No lie.

How has having a product specifically for your cultural/biracial/ethnic/multiracial background impacted your beauty regime?

Having a product like Mixed Chicks Leave-In Conditioner has helped me develop my own natural hair regimen, embrace and enhance my natural curl pattern, and wear my hair big, bold and confidently.

Do you use any other Mixed Chicks products as part of your beauty routine?

No, but hopefully in the future.

What new 2017 Mixed Chicks product are you interested in trying out?

I am interested in trying the Paddle Brush, the Spring Bands and a larger bottle of the Leave-In Conditioner.

How do your curls/hair texture represent your cultural/ethnic background?

My hair texture and curl pattern represents my ethnic background because it is a chameleon. Ethnic people, biracial or not, are an adaptable people. Changing hairstyles from curly to straight, or sleek coifs to frizzy pineapple up-dos are a representation of that same trait. Ever-changing and creative.

What is one feature of the Mixed Chicks brand that empowers your hair/beauty care?

I like that the Mixed Chicks brand has always represented different people and different curly hair types. Anyone with any type of curly mane can approach this brand with ease.

Why is the hair revolution celebrating natural/healthy hair types vital for our generation?

It is vital because it teaches us that we are all different, that we all come from a melting pot of cultures, and that it is okay to be an individual. No two people are the exact same, so how can curl/hair types be the exact same? There should never be “good hair” and “bad hair”. It is so important for us to celebrate all natural hair types so that we can continue to inspire growth, change and confidence within our mixed and ethnic communities.

Is there a (Mixed/Multiracial/Bi-racial) celebrity who empowers you?

I wouldn’t say that he empowers me, however, Hip-Hop Artist Logic is an admirable multiracial representative. Logic is amazing because in his craft, he openly discusses his emotional upbringing being a mixed kid, describing the confusion and frustration he experienced because society wanted to categorize or label him based on his skin color. He has far overcome those obsticles.

Do you have any go-to beauty/hair bloggers or vloggers who inspire or help your hairstyles?

I think Monica from Mo Knows Hair is amazing. She was my initial inspiration when I began wearing my hair naturally. My brand and blog, Live Clothes Minded, focuses heavily on personal style, creativity and artistic concepts, however I do share Medusa’s regimens (Yes, Medusa is my mane’s name) on my social media platforms.
