Welcome to the Your Hair Story Series presented by Mixed Chicks. This dynamic, new innovative series allows Mixed Chicks users to share their personal stories behind their hair. In 2018, do you feel the conversation around being multiracial/biracial/mixed has shifted more positively or negatively?
I believe that the conversation has grown more positive as our society has become more progressive. People of color are beginning to embrace (or reembrace) their roots in a world that is learning to be more accepting every day.
How did you find out about Mixed Chicks?
I had just decided to go through with “the Big Chop” after transitioning into my natural curls for a year and a half. I was going back through the more “curly” texture aisles at the store and came across Mixed Chicks. I picked up a bottle of Curl Sculptor and was hooked ever since.
What is your go-to Mixed Chicks product essential for your hair regime?
The Mixed Chicks Curl Sculptor is a must for me. It is very light; doesn’t weigh my hair down. It’s also super moisturizing, which is perfect for me as my hair tends to absorb fast and dry out.
How is your cultural/ethnic background reflected in your hair?
One of my parents is African American and the other is biracial, so my hair holds a defined, looser curl. The shrinkage can be quite tight at times.
Our campaign is focused on #itsminetodefine. What does this mean to you?
To me, this means that it is my time to claim my natural hair and my culture. For most of history, people of color have been told to tame their hair to society’s standards of beauty. It is our hair and our way of life; and we now live in a time where we can fully celebrate it and find pride in it.
What is your favorite protective style?
I absolutely love bantu knots. I usually sleep in them for the next day, but if they look nice, I’ll wear them out on the town.
What’s your Go-to Spring Hairstyle?
My curls allowed me to love my old bangs again. So usually, I wear my hair in bangs and a messy topknot or bun.
Do you have any go-to beauty/hair bloggers or vloggers who inspire or help your hairstyles?
Jasmine Brown and Mini Marley are definitely my two favorite hair vloggers on YouTube. I really love Zendaya’s hair and beauty routines too.
Which platform is your go-to outlet for hair advice?
YouTube and Instagram are really easy outlets for hair advice. When I was fully natural for the first time in ten years, I found thousands of videos/channels on YouTube helping me readjust to my curls. Instagram allowed me a better look into their styles.
