By Desiree Johnson

Welcome to the Your Hair Story Series presented by Mixed Chicks. This dynamic, new innovative series allows Mixed Chicks users to share their personal stories behind their hair. Hair that kinks, coils, curls, waves, and tells a story reflecting their culture, race, ethnicity, and upbringing. Like our customers, hair comes in all shades, textures and shapes unique to each individual and here at Mixed Chicks we want to celebrate that to the utmost extent. Meet our exquisite Mixed Chicks women, men, and children who exhibit beauty from the root and give us honest, bold stories that we are honored to share with you.

Shumekia

How do your curls/hair texture represent your cultural/ethnic background?

My cultural background is reflected in my hair through my texture, length and my curl pattern. I am of African American and Guyanese decent. In breaking down the different areas, I believe the length of my hair derives my Guyanese heritage. The texture is related to my African American heritage. The curls is a combination of both which makes my hair defined and unique in its natural state. The pattern/texture of my hair is at times difficult to please with products. Coming across Mixed Chicks products definitely resolved that issue!

Our new campaign is focused on #itsminetodefine, What does this mean to you?

#itsminetodefine, in my personal opinion letting your hair express itself being absolutely free in its natural state! It is a freedom and ability to use any product to express your personality through your hair. There are no limitations or expectations of what your hair should look like. Each day it can take its own natural stance, rise and shine with the day with anyway you should see fit. “It is a part of me and I will express myself through my hair!”

What’s your favorite protective style?

My favorite protective style would be a twist out with Deep Conditioner, it moisturizes the hair and maintains a healthy look.

In 2018, do you feel the conversation around being (Multiracial/Biracial/Mixed) has shifted more positively or negatively?

In 2018, the conversation around multiracial, bi-racial, mixed I believe has shifted more positively. We are in a stage where there has become more acceptance and individuals feeling comfortable with expressing their thoughts and opinions with or without biased judgment. It reflects back to the ability to express identity and feeling comfortable with who you are, and most times the community and public sector will embrace and at times follow.

How did you find out about Mixed Chicks?

My first encounter with mixed chicks is from the page of chelliscurls. She has an IG account that I follow for natural style recommendations. She said that the Leave-In Conditioner from mixed chicks can be used alone without any other products. That was an absolute sell for me! I have to use so many products to have my hair naturally curly without frizz.  It was true to statement, I used the leave in without any other products and it was frizz free for 5 to 6 days. Way to go!

What is your go-to Mixed Chicks product essential for your hair regime?

My go to in the mixed chick line is the Leave-In Conditioner and Curl Sculptor. The sculptor assist with the shrinkage and it also gives the hair a gel like feeling not so much condensation. Perfect amount of balance for the hair! Keeps and maintains great definition for several days. Opposed to other products may give me 3 days maximum.

What’s your Go-to Spring Hairstyle?

My favorite spring hairstyle is to wear my hair down in its natural state curly. After day 3 to 4, which now will be day 6 with mixed chicks I will put a pineapple ponytail or a bun.

Do you have any go-to beauty/hair bloggers or vloggers who inspire or help your hairstyles?

The only bloggers I had follow is chelliscurls and mzbiancarenee (thought our texture was similar). It is very difficult to find someone with almost exact similar texture.

Which platform is your go-to outlet for hair advice? (blogs, website, YouTube, Instagram)

For hair advice, I like to go to actual websites of products after walking down the aisles in beauty section of target. I also hashtag search in Instagram for curls etc.  Occasionally I will search You Tube.

What has been your favorite new Mixed Chicks product out this year?

My favorite mixed chicks product as I mentioned is the leave in conditioner and the curl sculptor it is my holy grail go to! It has defined my hair for more days than any other product and absolutely compliments my texture!
