Welcome to the Your Hair Story Series presented by Mixed Chicks. This dynamic, new innovative series allows Mixed Chicks users to share their personal stories behind their hair. Hair that kinks, coils, curls, waves, and tells a story reflecting their culture, race, ethnicity, and upbringing. Like our customers, hair comes in all shades, textures and shapes unique to each individual and here at Mixed Chicks we want to celebrate that to the utmost extent. Meet our exquisite Mixed Chicks women, men, and children who exhibit beauty from the root and give us honest, bold stories that we are honored to share with you.
Yahyla
In 2018, do you feel the conversation around being (Multiracial/Biracial/Mixed) has shifted more positively or negatively?
Being biracial has definitely shifted to a more positive connotation. With a mixture of multiple cultures to make beautiful individuals who support each background they inherit, being multiracial is definitely more appreciated now than ever.
How did you find out about Mixed Chicks?
Mixed Chicks is a product I picked up from my older sister way back in 2010, it has been a holy grail especially in my transitional phases.
What is your go-to Mixed Chicks product essential for your hair regime?
Mixed Chicks Deep Conditioner, not only does it smell amazing, but it leaves my hair feel so hydrated and nourished.
How is your cultural/ethnic background reflected in your hair? (ex: texture, length, curl pattern, etc.)
Being half Puerto Rican and Black I was blessed with very defined curls ranging between 3c and 4a. My dad had looser curls on the 3b side, while my mom sported her afrolicious kinks of 4c, being a product of this mixture I learned to love the bounce and kinks my curls contain.
Our new campaign is focused on #itsminetodefine, What does this mean to you?
#itsminetodefine essentially means to me that, if I own it I make it, it is up to me to show the definition of the contents I withhold, and no one can take that from me.
What’s your favorite protective style?
Wash and gos have to be my go to, whether I feel like spending the time to go through the process or not, you will always see me rocking a well defined and hydrated wash and go.
What’s your Go-to Spring Hairstyle?
My hairstyles range between 2 french braids, wash and gos, and sleek low bun, it is never just one when you live in a indecisive climate!
Do you have any go-to beauty/hair bloggers or vloggers who inspire or help your hairstyles?
Nia Imani, Naptural85 are of the few Youtubers that I enjoy because they teach need-to-know facts about natural hair products and the contents they contain and how they benefit ones hair; Their hair also reflects the same pattern as mine, which is very much needed when kinkier curls do not have as much representation in the media. They also create diy products that are extremely beneficial for being on a budget, which has been undeniably helpful!
Which platform is your go-to outlet for hair advice? (blogs, website, YouTube, Instagram)
Instagram for sure, everyone is connected all across the world and there are options to post videos or a picture to describe the products used and show styles at a fast pace, Youtube comes second when I want to watch a detailed video on how to do a style, I plan on making my own channel soon so I can show step by step how I style and maintain my curls.
What has been your favorite new Mixed Chicks product out this year?
The Styling Gel has been so helpful in keeping my curls frizz free and defined.
