By Desiree Johnson

Welcome to the Your Hair Story Series presented by Mixed Chicks. This dynamic, new innovative series allows Mixed Chicks users to share their personal stories behind their hair. Hair that kinks, coils, curls, waves, and tells a story reflecting their culture, race, ethnicity, and upbringing. Like our customers, hair comes in all shades, textures and shapes unique to each individual and here at Mixed Chicks we want to celebrate that to the utmost extent. Meet our exquisite Mixed Chicks women, men, and children who exhibit beauty from the root and give us honest, bold stories that we are honored to share with you.

Chelsea

What does being (“Mixed”/ Multiracial/Bi-racial/ a Minority) mean to you in 2017?

It means not having to choose one aspect of yourself culturally or aesthetically. Being racially diverse allows one to appreciate and accept beauty in every form and empathize with those who have always been categorized as “other.” I love being “other” and having the opportunity to break down color lines and misconceptions regarding race, hair, and culture.

Who inspires your beauty routine? How does it incorporate into your personal style?

I know/follow so many amazing women who wear their natural so well, but Nathalie Emmanuel is my forever hair crush. She has such a platform for natural hair as one of the leading actors of Game of Thrones. But off camera, she has a very bohemian, free-form style. She inspires me to let go of perfect coils some days and let my hair form it’s own architecture.

Why is your go-to Mixed Chicks product essential for your hair regime?

My new obsession is the Morning After Redefining Foam! It gives my tired curls life and moisture in between washes which work wonders for my hectic schedule. I love the hold it gives while simultaneously allowing volume! It’s absolutely necessary for my on-the-go lifestyle.

How do your curls/hair texture represent your cultural/ethnic background?

My curls consist of a blend of textures and display my Black/Italian background perfectly. Hair is a cool conversation starter. I think our ancestry and ethnic background is much more complex than hair, but it’s also a bold statement about one’s heritage.

What is one feature of the Mixed Chicks brand that empowers your hair/beauty care?

A few years ago, I remember noticing that there was a “Multicultural Hair Care” Line in major department and drug stores for the first time. It’s so important for people to see themselves in a brand, and Mixed Chicks does a phenomenal job capturing the vast possibilities of beautiful blending and encourages natural women, men, and kids to embrace their unique curl textures and backgrounds!

Which haircare trend are you excited to try this season?

I’m reall excited to try protective styles! Primarily braids. I LOVE for my coils to be free, but I want to experiment with intricate braiding that shows my texture while protecting my hair from the elements.

What’s your Go-to Fall Hairstyle?

Choppy layers, bangs, and volume! I love the drama of huge hair during this season. I like to switch it up my adding a few braids to pin one side up but definitely down and BIG.

What has been your favorite new Mixed Chicks product out this year?

I’m really impressed with the Daily Hair Dress. It calms frizz and moisturizes without being heavy! I love putting it under a foam or gel to moisturize before defining curls.
