By Desiree Johnson

Welcome to the Your Hair Story Series presented by Mixed Chicks. This dynamic, new innovative series allows Mixed Chicks users to share their personal stories behind their hair. Hair that kinks, coils, curls, waves, and tells a story reflecting their culture, race, ethnicity, and upbringing. Like our customers, hair comes in all shades, textures and shapes unique to each individual and here at Mixed Chicks we want to celebrate that to the utmost extent. Meet our exquisite Mixed Chicks women, men, and children who exhibit beauty from the root and give us honest, bold stories that we are honored to share with you.

What does being (“Mixed”/ Multiracial/Bi-racial/ a Minority) mean to you in 2017?

Being mixed means being comfortable in my own skin, loving myself, and learning to be very knowledgeable in both of my nationalities. Being mixed is a beautiful thing and a lot of people do not see it that way. Loving the way you were brought into this world is most important! If you don’t love yourself, how are others supposed to love you! I Love, and embrace being bi-racial!!

Who inspires your beauty routine? How does it incorporate into your personal style?

When I initially began my curly hair journey it was a rough time because I wore my hair straight for so long and my hair was not used to being in its natural curly state. My inspiration came when I moved to Los Angeles and the weather was much more promising for my type of hair, I could wear it curly and it would look full as well as nourished. My beauty routine for my curly hair is to never comb my hair with a brush or comb; I only run through it with my fingers in the shower while the mixed chicks deep conditioner is in it. Then, I put the Mixed Chicks Leave-In Conditioner and gel in it when I am out of the shower, while my hair is still very wet and before letting it air dry.

Why is your go-to Mixed Chicks product essentialfor your hair regime?

First off, I love the name because it resonated with me and that is why I originally bought the product. Once I tried the product, I fell in love because it not only makes your hair look extremely healthy, it also brings bounce, nourishment, and it defines the curls in your hair so you can wear your hair natural at all times! For a long time it was hard for me to do my hair because of the texture. It was also hard for me to find the right products. Mixed Chicks fixed this for me and I am eternally grateful!! Thanks Mixed Chicks!!

How do your curls/hair texture represent your cultural/ethnic background?

The texture of my hair is very different because I have different curl patterns all around my head.  For years I did not like my hair in it’s natural state and now, with Mixed Chicks products and the new curl movement, I embrace my curls and I am proud of them.  Growing up where I did, it was frowned upon for wearing my hair out and big and I also did not have a product that worked well for me, so when I would wear my hair out, my curls were not as defined and my hair was really dry.  Now, with Mixed Chicks, I can wear my hair natural and curly! I appreciate my roots and ethnicity of being Puerto Rican and African American. Both ethnicities show in the texture of my hair and now, I can only say, I am blessed to be different and have a different look!

What is one feature of the Mixed Chicks brandthat empowers your hair/beauty care?

Actually all of the features work for my hair and they empower my hair/beauty care.  My two favorites are the Deep Conditioner and the Leave In-Conditioner. As a Mixed Chick, my hair has to have moisture and conditioner is very important because it keeps your hair nourished and moisturized. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE both of these products and I have yet to have found a Deep Conditioner or Leave-In Conditioner that works as well as Mixed Chicks does!

Which haircare trend are you excited to try this season?

I am very excited to try a new trend with a curl cut right above my shoulders and a different hair color that will bring out my skin color.  I love the red and blonde look, so I will definitely be trying that hair color this coming spring.  I like changing the styles of my hair and I am not afraid to try new things anymore! Before I would be worried because I did not know how my hair would react to certain styles and colors.  Now that I have a great product, routine and regimen, my hair is as healthy as can be and it responds very well to new styles and colors.

What’s your Go-to Fall Hairstyle?

My go-to fall style is big, bold and beautiful.  I like to keep darker colors in my hair during the fall season and I love wearing my hair out and curly the most because it goes with my personality.

Do you have any go-to beauty/hair bloggers or vloggers who inspire or help your hairstyles?

I watch hair tutorials on all of the social media outlets for new hair trends. My favorite hair vloggers are Taren916 and MsVaughnTV because I feel we have similar hair textures and I really like the styles they come up with. They give great advice on products to use as well!

Which platform is your go-to outlet for hair advice? (blogs, website, YouTube, Instagram)

For hair advice I will go to you tube the most. I love watching hair tutorials and how other women do their hair.  I always try new styles so You Tube is awesome if you are trying to find a hot new hairstyle!

What has been your favorite new Mixed Chicks product out this year?

My favorite Mixed Chick product out this year is the Leave-In Conditioner. I use this twice a week after my hair is really wet! I love how it makes my hair feel very soft and really nourished. Even after it is dry it feels soft and my curls are bold and beautiful when I use it! I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it!
