Mixed Chicks: Your Hair Story Series – Kaela

By Desiree Johnson

Welcome to the Your Hair Story Series presented by Mixed Chicks. This dynamic, new innovative series allows Mixed Chicks users to share their personal stories behind their hair. Hair that kinks, coils, curls, waves, and tells a story reflecting their culture, race, ethnicity, and upbringing. Like our customers, hair comes in all shades, textures and shapes unique to each individual and here at Mixed Chicks we want to celebrate that to the utmost extent. Meet our exquisite Mixed Chicks women, men, and children who exhibit beauty from the root and give us honest, bold stories that we are honored to share with you.

Kaela

What does being Mixed, Multiracial or Bi-racial mean to you in 2017?
In 2017 I see beauty through my own eyes. No matter what race or ethnic background I am, no matter what label my sister holds, we are here. We are powerful. We are strong. We are successful. We are worthy, and we are beautiful.

Do you have a go-to or token Mixed Chick Product you cannot go without? My go-to Mixed Chicks product is the Leave-In conditioner. Whether I am fresh out of the shower, or need to ‘get up and go’, the leave-in conditioner comes to the rescue. It tames my frizz (using this product the past couple years, the word ‘frizz’ has not even been in my vocabulary), and allows my curls to stay soft and beautiful.

How has having a product specifically for your cultural/biracial/ethnic/multiracial background impacted your beauty regime? My cultural background is no secret. I am not biracial. I am not multiracial. I am Canadian-born and both my parents are white.  I was born with beautiful, natural, curly hair. Growing up I struggled with the curls, struggled with the frizz, and struggled with older women asking me if it was a perm and telling me how much they pay for hair like mine. As an athlete, I tied my hair back daily to keep it ‘out of the way’. Once I found Mixed Chicks, my hair did what I knew it could do. A product designed for a specific culture has allowed me, a woman of a different culture, to find my beauty. I walk freely, with my head up and hair down, feeling beautiful and empowered.

Do you use any other Mixed Chicks products as part of your beauty routine? As part of my daily routine, I use the Mixed Chicks shampoo, deep conditioner, and leave-in conditioner.

What new 2017 Mixed Chicks product are you interested in trying out?  I am interested in trying the HAIR SILK gloss and shine, and the straightening serum.

How do your curls/hair texture represent your cultural/ethnic background? My curls do not represent my culture/ethnic background. My curls represent me. I have two cousins who have curly hair but I have always been different. I have been taught that different is beautiful. I embrace my curls, I embrace my culture, and I embrace my style. God made me this way and I love Him for it.

What is one feature of the Mixed Chicks brand that empowers your hair/beauty care? One feature of the Mixed Chicks brand that empowers my hair/beauty care is that this stuff really works! There is no reason to hide. I am different and my hair is different. Mixed Chicks product leaves me feeling confident and beautiful in who I truly am.

Why is the hair revolution celebrating natural/healthy hair types vital for our generation? Each of us was created for a specific purpose. Each of us is beautiful, different, unique, and flawless. To me, being natural and healthy goes way beyond hair. It is vital for our generation to celebrate everyone’s natural individuality, not only with hair but with culture, style, beliefs, and freedoms. In this generation, we can speak up and be heard. Let’s celebrate who we really are.

Is there a (Mixed/Multiracial/Bi-racial) celebrity who empowers you? God empowers me. He is of every culture. Because of that, I empower myself and love and respect every culture as well.

Do you have any go-to beauty/hair bloggers or vloggers who inspire or help your hairstyles? (If you are a blogger/vlogger please feel free to share information on your page/brand)I do not have any go-to beauty vloggers I follow.
