Stephanie Espejo

What has your experience been with the Mixed Chicks products? Mixed Chicks was the very FIRST hair product I have used specific to curly hair. My best friend, Carolyn, introduced me to it and I have never stopped using it. This product helped me manage my newfound curly hair since the big chop back in 2014.

What makes them different than other hair/beauty products you tried in the past? Mixed chicks Leave in conditioner is my go to strong hold product. It is different because while it has a creamy consistency, it actually functions a lot like a gel. It has the strong hold I need for my thick hair without the crunch of a typical gel.

Do you have a Go-To or token Mixed Chick Product you cannot go without? I CANNOT go without my Mixed Chicks Leave in Conditioner. I have a 32 oz. and travel size at ALL times. It is important for me as I am always traveling between NYC and Chicago and need to have my products everywhere I go.

How has having a product specifically for your cultural/biracial/ethnic/multiracial background impacted your beauty regime? Ever since I was a child I have looked in the aisles of drug stores and supermarkets for products geared towards thick curly hair. It was disheartening to only see products for eliminating frizz and for straightened hair because it always made me feel like my hair needed to be corrected. It made me feel like my hair was a mistake. It means the world to me to see that now curly thick hair is being represented in stores. It will teach many children that their hair is just as beautiful and represented as straight hair. I hope this makes a difference in their perception of beauty.

How do your curls/hair texture represent your cultural/ethnic background? I am the child of two Dominican parents. My father is from the city and my mother is from the countryside. My father has very thick hair and my mom has thin wavy hair. My father is dark skinned and my mother is light skinned. My hair is representative of the diversity within the Dominican culture. I am the blend of two colors, textures and cities. I love it!

What is one feature of the Mixed Chicks brand that empowers your hair/beauty care? Mixed Chicks has a very diverse line of products that help all textures choose what works for them. Diversity is as important in hair care as it is in everyday life!

If you could define Your Hair Story in one word what would it be? Defiant

Why is the hair revolution celebrating natural/healthy hair types vital for our generation? I believe that the hair revolution is vital to empowering children to embrace their differences. Children will benefit greatly from embracing their natural beauty. This will also help them learn how to accept differences in others. There are many societal perceptions of beauty that are being propagated within the media and affecting our generation. If something isn’t done about this, it will undoubtedly have a profound effect on generations to come.

If your ‘Mixed Chick’ story were a song, what would it be? Sia- Bird Set Free

Do you have any go-to beauty/hair bloggers or vloggers who inspire or help your hairstyles? I am not a blogger but I do enjoy learning from a few of them. One of my very favorites is Jade Kendle (lipstickncurls). I feel that we have very similar hair and style so all of her suggestions go a long way for me. She also seems like a very down to earth individual. She is wonderful.
