By Desiree Johnson

Welcome to the Your Hair Story Series presented by Mixed Chicks. This dynamic, new innovative series allows Mixed Chicks users to share their personal stories behind their hair. Hair that kinks, coils, curls, waves, and tells a story reflecting their culture, race, ethnicity, and upbringing. Like our customers, hair comes in all shades, textures and shapes unique to each individual and here at Mixed Chicks we want to celebrate that to the utmost extent. Meet our exquisite Mixed Chicks women, men, and children who exhibit beauty from the root and give us honest, bold stories that we are honored to share with you.

Heather

In 2018, do you feel the conversation around being (Multiracial/Biracial/Mixed) has shifted more positively or negatively?

The conversation has fallen on both sides. Our natural hair has become a positive movement and has become more common to see in the work place, to be honest that’s one of the reasons why I accepted my job in the ICU. I immediately knew I would be comfortable wearing my natural hair at work since the day I met my manager – after my interview, we bonded over the products and tricks we use to keep our wash and goes full and everlasting. If I couldn’t be comfortable being who I am, there’s no way I would be able to make my patient fee comfortable, especially when they are going through such life changing events.

Unfortunately, I’ve also seen a negative shift. I’ve seen young girls and boys want to wear their natural hair, but are ashamed to because their hair doesn’t match the loose and bouncy coils they see on social media. I’ve seen hair brands take advantage of these young naturals by persuading them with 3C wigs and tracks to to achieve the “look” that they aspire for.

The natural movement is new and still growing, there are going to be mountains to climb and battles to conquer, but we’re all in this together to make it better and to learn from each other.

How did you find out about Mixed Chicks?

I first found out about Mixed Chicks in high school. Many of my curly haired cousins used the products and said it was the only hair product that worked for their curls. The Mixed Chicks Leave-In Conditioner was the first product I ever purchased — it was love at first detangle.

What is your go-to Mixed Chicks product essential for your hair regime?

Definitely the Curl Sculptor! It’s so light, easily spreads through all my curls, leaving my hair feeling soft, shiny, and bouncy!

How is your cultural/ethnic background reflected in your hair? (ex: texture, length, curl pattern, etc.)

I’m a proud African-American woman, but like many of us we have ethnic and cultural backgrounds from everywhere.

I have all different types of curls, kinks, coils, and waves scattered throughout my hair. I have the waviness and curls up front from dad’s German and Black side and the kinks and coils scattered all around the sides and the back from my mom’s black and native side. My hair is mixed, just like me, but that’s what makes me and my curls special.

Our new campaign is focused on #itsminetodefine, What does this mean to you?

I’m continuously creating the definition of myself as I grow. Everyday, I’m blooming — learning and changing. What has been written for me, has not be sealed, but better yet opened up, crossed out, and continued. #itsminetodefine is just that, speaking for myself, writing my own story, whether it be through my hair, my style, my look, I define who I am, what I want, and where I am going. It’s my uniqueness.

What’s your favorite protective style?

Definitely a pineapple. It’s my go to in all situations! Can be classy or casual, it’s the perfect style.

What’s your Go-to Winter Hairstyle?

A crown twist — lasts long, easy to manage, and I love to rock the wavy look for a couple of days after I take down the twists.

Do you have any go-to beauty/hair bloggers or vloggers who inspire or help your hairstyles?

I love bloggers and that cater to all hair types like @moknowahair @curlpopnhair, @jayhairbigga, @queenelizabette___, and @mahoganycurls

What has been your favorite new Mixed Chicks product out this year?

The Curl Sculpture gives that extra “umph” to my hair, leaving my wash and go smooth and effortless.
