Mixed Chicks: Your Hair Story Series – Katrina

By Desiree Johnson

Welcome to the Your Hair Story Series presented by Mixed Chicks. This dynamic, new innovative series allows Mixed Chicks users to share their personal stories behind their hair. Hair that kinks, coils, curls, waves, and tells a story reflecting their culture, race, ethnicity, and upbringing. Like our customers, hair comes in all shades, textures and shapes unique to each individual and here at Mixed Chicks we want to celebrate that to the utmost extent. Meet our exquisite Mixed Chicks women, men, and children who exhibit beauty from the root and give us honest, bold stories that we are honored to share with you.

Katrina

What has your experience been with the Mixed Chicks products? My experience with Mixed Chicks products has always been great! I actually switched to Mixed Chicks after my big chop four years ago. I couldn’t find a product that I absolutely loved in my hair so I continued my search until I came across the leave in conditioner at my local beauty supply store. It’s been magic ever since.

What makes them different than other hair/beauty products you tried in the past? I believe the one thing that differentiates Mixed Chicks from other products is the name and the hair definition that I get from the product.

Do you have a Go-To or token Mixed Chick Product you cannot go without? My Go-To product that I cannot go without is the leave in conditioner. It is my absolute favorite hair product and I spend the extra money every month just to get the big 32-ounce bottle online!

How has having a product specifically for your cultural/biracial/ethnic/multiracial background impacted your beauty regime? I have always had complications with my hair, especially when I was a child. I struggled with liking, styling, and even straightening my hair for the longest time. I am mixed with white, black, and Cherokee Indian. My hair is the curliest of my other two siblings and we honestly had no clue how to manage it. As I grew older and experienced my big chop, I started to understand my hair and learning how to work with it. However, I was still spending hours upon hours styling it because there wasn’t enough definition, there was too much frizz, or just not meshing with my hair at all. The Mixed Chicks leave in conditioner really saves me a ton of time because it’s a two in one. I don’t need any additional products like gel or styling cream. It moisturizes and defines in one application.

How do your curls/hair texture represent your cultural/ethnic background? I am mixed with white, black, and Cherokee Indian. When I flat iron my hair straight, people tend to think I look more Caucasian. When I wear my hair big and curly, people see that I am mixed. Either way it goes, I love that my hair texture represents my mash up of ethnicities. It makes me unique, and my features in general show some of my mother and father and I love that!

What is one feature of the Mixed Chicks brand that empowers your hair/beauty care? I think the one thing of the Mixed Chicks brand that empowers my hair and beauty care is the name. The name “Mixed Chicks” makes me feel like there are others, just like me, that were in need of a product that is tailored to our hair textures. That is comforting to me.

If you could define Your Hair Story in one word what would it be? Educational

Why is the hair revolution celebrating natural/healthy hair types vital for our generation? I believe it is vital for our generation because I will help people to understand that no matter what texture, color, length, or even kind of hair you have, it is what you were born with and its beautiful! Our only concern should be that our hair is healthy and happy. I think this is especially true for all of my curly girls because our natural or “nappy” hair has been frowned upon for ages and it is important that we understand that our hair is beautiful and absolutely unique in every way. We have the most versatile hair there is and just because its different, doesn’t make it bad. I believe this is especially helpful for our younger generation because people are so easily teased when they look different from the “norm”, and knowing that there are others just like you out in the world, who have experienced the same things you are going through is extremely re-assuring.

If your ‘Mixed Chick’ story were a song, what would it be? Lianne La Havas – Green & Gold (Kartell Remix)

Do you have any go-to beauty/hair bloggers or vloggers who inspire or help your hairstyles? I am a style blogger and I use my hair as an accessory in a lot of my posts. I also have a lifestyle YouTube channel that I plan to use for style, hair, and makeup tutorials. Both the blog and the YouTube channel fall under the name Katrina Gabrielle because I am branding myself. Some individuals that have really inspired me through my hair journey include YouTuber Mahogany Curls and the creator of Happy Fro Day, blogger and YouTuber FroGirl Ginny.
