Welcome to the Your Hair Story Series presented by Mixed Chicks. This dynamic, new innovative series allows Mixed Chicks users to share their personal stories behind their hair. Hair that kinks, coils, curls, waves, and tells a story reflecting their culture, race, ethnicity, and upbringing. What has your experience been with the Mixed Chicks products? Mixed chicks was one of the first hair products I used in my transition from relaxed her to all natural curls. In fact, my first hair product review when I began my blog www.afrolatinanatural.com was the Mixed Chicks Leave-In conditioner. It has been three years and it is still one of my favorite hair product lines.
What makes them different than other hair/beauty products you tried in the past? It is in inclusive and embraces all hair types or hairstyles. I can use it for myself as well as for my children.
Do you have a Go-To or token Mixed Chick Product you cannot go without? Although I’m way my childhood years, the kids leave-in conditioner is by far my FAVORITE. It is a house hold item.
How has having a product specifically for your cultural/biracial/ethnic/multiracial background impacted your beauty regime? Embracing my natural kinks and coils as an AfroLatina was not easy. In my community having kinks and coils is not always deemed beautiful. However, in my journey embracing my natural hair having a product that nourishes my natural curls as I explore my natural beauty it’s a relief as well as liberating.
How do your curls/hair texture represent your cultural/ethnic background? As an AfroLatina, my natural curls are a source of empowerment because it is a beautiful way to showcase my pride of my afrodescendiencia or African descent.
What is one feature of the Mixed Chicks brand that empowers your hair/beauty care? The leave-in conditioner allows me to maintain my curls’ health by hydrating and nourishing it.
If you could define Your Hair Story in one word what would it be? Liberating / Liberadora
Why is the hair revolution celebrating natural/healthy hair types vital for our generation? It is vital for mothers, sisters, daughters model pride in our natural beauty and redefine it in our own terms for generations to come. Self acceptance, self-appreciation and self-love with vital to raise strong women. In my case, my blog www.AfroLatinaNatural.com was inspired by my daughter. Our daughters are watching. We need to set the example.
If your ‘Mixed Chick’ story were a song, what would it be? I listen, read, and see in two languages. If my Mixed Chick hair story were a song in Spanish, it would be “Soy yo” by Bomba Estereo. If my Mixed Chick hair story were a song in English it would be “Growth” by India Arie.
Do you have any go-to beauty/hair bloggers or vloggers who inspire or help your hairstyles? Dominican born, Puerto Rico and Chicago raised blogger Anyiné (ann-yee-neh) “Angie” Galván-Rodríguez, identifies herself as an Afro-Latina. Her journey as a blogger began in 2013 when she decided to share her experience as she transitioned from relaxed hair to fully natural hair curls. What began as a “naturalista” bilingual blog about her natural hair journey inspired by her daughter and hair product reviews, flourished into a pathway to embracing and confirming her identity as an Afro-Latina. Her blog is a personal exploration of her personal experience of being an Afro-Latino/a in the USA. In addition to sharing hair product reviews for natural curly hair and encouraging more Latinas to go natural, she continues to share her experiences through an Afro-Latina lens. Ultimately, she hopes to encourage self-love among Latina girls and women of African descent in the USA and Latin America by embracing their natural beauty and natural curls, kinks and coils.
Anyiné is a writer at heart and a teacher by day. With a B.A. in Spanish literature and Latin America studies as well as a Master’s in Education, she is able to share her passion of Latin American Culture and the Spanish language with students from various backgrounds. When she is not teaching, spending time with her loved ones or writing for her blog. She is currently working on a project which soon will be her first book published.
