By Desiree Johnson

Welcome to the Your Hair Story Series presented by Mixed Chicks. This dynamic, new innovative series allows Mixed Chicks users to share their personal stories behind their hair. Hair that kinks, coils, curls, waves, and tells a story reflecting their culture, race, ethnicity, and upbringing. Like our customers, hair comes in all shades, textures and shapes unique to each individual and here at Mixed Chicks we want to celebrate that to the utmost extent. Meet our exquisite Mixed Chicks women, men, and children who exhibit beauty from the root and give us honest, bold stories that we are honored to share with you.

Zoe

What does being (“Mixed”/ Multiracial/Bi-racial/ a Minority) mean to you in 2017?

In 2017, I feel like almost all of us are Mixed somehow. It could mean that you are a little bit of another ethnicity, or it could be that you are 5 ethnicities blended together. Different people of different races are blending so much that pretty soon we will not be able to follow exactly which “mix” people are. It’s amazing because when I was younger, we still needed to only mark one box on the ethnicity question. It has been great to see the evolution.

Do you have a go-to or token Mixed Chick Product you cannot go without?

Mixed Chicks Leave In Conditioner!!!!! My favorite. It’s light weight so it doesn’t weigh my curls down, but still holds the twist. It doesn’t make them crunchy either. I don’t enjoy products that do that.

How has having a product specifically for your cultural/biracial/ethnic/multiracial background impacted your beauty regime?

It has been amazing to have a whole section in the store dedicated to people just like ME! My whole life my mom and I struggled to find products that were right for my hair type. Products that were made for straighter hair weren’t right, and products that were made for coarse, super curly hair weren’t right either. It was difficult and frustrating. I almost had my hair chemically straightened because I never felt confident with it down and natural. Mixed Chicks has made me feel comfortable and confident to wear my hair out and flaunt it.

How do your curls/hair texture represent your cultural/ethnic background?

My mom is Irish and German and my dad is African American. My hair has all different textures in it. Some pieces are quite straight, others wavy, and others coiled.

What is one feature of the Mixed Chicks brand that empowers your hair/beauty care?

I think it is so important to feel comfortable in your natural state. Mixed Chicks is awesome because it embraces the fact that we are biracial and embraces our curls! This brand has shown me that it’s about enhancing your curls, not taming or controlling them. This brand has helped teach me how to care for my hair. Now I love my curls!!

Why is the hair revolution celebrating natural/healthy hair types vital for our generation?

Celebrating natural hair is so important for our generation because it is about loving your whole self and appreciating what you have. We are in a society that promotes beauty in a certain way. Not everyone looks that way. It is so important for women of all ages, colors, and hair types to feel supported in wearing our hair healthy and natural and know that we aren’t being judged. We’re all beautiful.
