Welcome to the Your Hair Story Series presented by Mixed Chicks. This dynamic, new innovative series allows Mixed Chicks users to share their personal stories behind their hair. - In 2018, do you feel the conversation around being (Multiracial/Biracial/Mixed) has shifted more positively or negatively?
Since I wasn’t feeling as though I have enough years on this Earth to properly answer this question, I decided to hire out and ask my Grandmother! My Grandmother is approaching 90 years of age (please don’t tell her I put that on the internet, she’d kill me) and like me, she has a White father and a Black mother. She said the conversation is definitely more positive! Not only did her parents receive criticism for being in an interracial relationship, but she and her brothers and sisters experienced name calling and discrimination for being one of the few biracial families in the area she grew up in.
My experience growing up was vastly different than hers. I didn’t experience much outward discrimination for being biracial; however, when I was younger I rarely saw people who looked like me represented in movies, magazines or other media.
The rise of social media gave more people a voice and the opportunity to showcase the beautiful diversity that exists in our Human Race! My Grandmother ended our conversation by saying, “These days, if you see an interracial couple or family, people don’t give it a second thought.” Of course, there’s always work to be done to move us towards true acceptance and inclusion, but I think the conversation has definitely taken some big, positive steps forward!
- How did you find out about Mixed Chicks?
I stumbled upon Mixed Chicks Leave-In Conditioner by accident while perusing the aisles of the local drugstore. What immediately jumped out to me was the name of the product – Mixed Chicks. This was the first time I had ever seen a product and felt like it was actually for me. Honestly, it felt too good to be true. I picked up the product to read the label, assuming that I misinterpreted the name.
“Finally, a curl defining formula designed for “us.” Whether you’re black, white, asian, latin, mediterranean or any glorious combination of the above…”
This product is for me! Finally, a brand that recognizes diversity! Naturally I bought the leave-in conditioner and it’s been love ever since.
- What is your go-to Mixed Chicks product essential for your hair regime?
Well I guess my answer above gave away a major spoiler for this one, but it’s definitely the Mixed Chicks Leave-In Conditioner. This product works great in my hair because it provides moisture without weighing down my curls. I’ve found it difficult to find a leave-in conditioner that moisturizes without being too “heavy” in my hair. The Mixed Chicks Leave-In Conditioner is a must have in my hair regime!
- How is your cultural/ethnic background reflected in your hair? (ex: texture, length, curl pattern, etc.)
I have hair that is similar to my mother’s; although, she has more of a “coily” curl pattern. My hair is very thick and I would describe my curl pattern as “3c”; my curls look like corkscrews and are very densely packed together. My hair is also high porosity, which means it doesn’t hold on to moisture very well. I use oils to help lock in moisture.
- Our new campaign is focused on #itsminetodefine. What does this mean to you?
To me, #itsminetodefine means feeling comfortable and confident, no matter what way you choose to wear your hair!
- What’s your favourite protective style?
I’m a very lazy curly girl, so my go-to protective style is a ballerina-esque bun with a little edge-control.
- Which platform is your go-to outlet for hair advice?
