I absolutely love my hair and can honestly say that going natural is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made! Why?!? Because it is so liberating!!  However, it still fathoms me that the thought of chopping off most of my hair years ago even crossed my mind — given I was more reserved and less of a risk taker then.

Hold up, let’s take a step back and start from the beginning! :D

Five years ago, I was standing in the bathroom mirror of my Cincinnati apartment dreadfully taking down a sew in. As I finished, I contemplated on whether or not I wanted a change. You, know…something drastic.  [If you know me, you’d know I rarely do DRASTIC!] However, it was definitely time for a change as I had been rocking the same style for my long permed hair for years (a silk or roller wrap with occasional braids and sew ins).

So, I did it — “The Big Chop” (snip, snip)! Following, I was in complete shock for two reasons: (1) I couldn’t believe that I had just done that, (2) My hair is sooooo short! Well, it was too late to turn back as the damage had already been done. Cutting my hair was always something I wanted to do, and I’d finally got enough courage to do so. Further affirmation was when my boyfriend (now husband) came into the bathroom and said, “You did it!” :O

Little did I know, I was in for a major learning curb.  The struggle was all the way real. My hair was so short that I couldn’t even style it into a ponytail. A million thoughts began to run through my head to reassure myself of the decision I’d just made…”You wanted this change“, “It’s just hair“, “It will grow backeventually“, “Embrace it“, “Figure it out“, “You got this“. So after giving myself the pep talk, I decided on a style that would give my hair bit more length…mini twists. To date, they’re still my go to style.

Now that I’ve given you the rundown, let’s get back to present day.  I’m much more wiser and way better with managing my hair. Also, I’m glad to have come across some of my favorite hair care products along the way.  Mixed Chicks is one of those brands that I can’t get enough of, especially the latest products from their line. They were kind enough to send a few items my way, and my hair absolutely glorified them!

However, there are two products that I would like to highlight.

  1. Conditioning Cleansing Co-Wash:  I started with this product; and, to be honest, I was pleasantly surprised that it cleansed my scalp so well. I’m typically a shampoo girl, but this product has changed my thinking.
  2. Coils, Kinks, and Waves Styling Cream: Following the co-wash, I used this cream to style my hair into two strand twists. This light weight cream gave my coils extreme definition and shine.

These two products and the rest of the line will become staples in my hair regimen.  If you’re a natural hair rocker and are searching for new products, Mixed Chicks is a must have!
